A SayNoTo1890.com reader has asked if anyone might have a geographic alternative for their standard number – 1890 990 707.

If you can help out, drop me an e-mail here – or make a comment below, and I’ll share with everyone else.

Number request: Hotpoint and Indesit Servicing

A SayNoTo1890.com reader has asked if anyone has a geographical phone number for the Hotpoint and Indesit servicing in Ireland. According to theirs (and various other) websites, the contact number is 0818 313413.

As regular readers will know, this 0818 number actually makes money for the company when people call in.

Does anyone (maybe even a member of staff there) have a geographical alternative for that service?

Number Request – DublinBikes.ie – Dublin City Council website

Can anyone help out this reader? I can’t find out anything more on their website.

Great site with valuable information! Thanks for putting it together and operating it!

I came a cross a new number and wonder if you could include it in the Number Request category:

Dublinbikes.ie will launch soon and their number for problems etc is 1850 777 070. Any chance to “decode” that number?

Readers e-mail – who’s impacted by these 1890, 1850 & 0818 numbers

saynoto1890

This e-mail came through from a user of the SayNoTo1890.com website in the recent past.

Came across your website after seeing Which? article about saynoto0870.com. My bugbear is Sky customer services 0818 number – I had 4 hours of phone calls to them (trying to fix problem they caused with their new viewing cards!) If I had an ordinary national or local number I wouldn’t have had to pay anything as I have free national (except 0818 of course) and local calls tariff with eircom. The nice Glaswegian girl in Sky did try and find one. She gave me an 0845 number and told me it was only a local call rate(!!), but came up empty for Ireland.  Another one is the 1850 373 772 for ESB public lighting section – I do my civic duty and reports light out and get charged for it. The nice Cork girl at the ESB couldn’t find a ‘normal’ number for me.

I didn’t realise the full consequences of the 1890 numbers, which the company I work for use. I don’t think we realise the latest consequences of our locall numbers.

Do businesses (who are the majority users of our locall numbers) suffer as much with the charging structure of 1890 as private customers? If you say they do, then I’ll certainly highlight your website and 1890 consequences with our marketing and customer service departments, as our intention is to provide a local cost service to our business clients and we’re not making any money from offering the 1890 numbers, so it must be the phone companies!

There is no distinction between business and personal phone callers when using 1890 phone numbers – what does impact on all users of these numbers is the phone package that they’re on.

If they have a phone package with inclusive minutes, then these 1890, 1850 and 0818 numbers will cost those calling the numbers. In fact, it will cost significantly more than even if they were to call an 01 number without the inclusive minutes – sometimes up to 30c per minute.

Requests for 1890, 1850 or 0818 Numbers – some things to do first

In recent times, I’ve received a large number of e-mails and comments on the site where people are asking for the geographical alternative numbers for various companies and organisations.

While I’m happy to help out wherever I can, there are a couple of things that I’d love if people could do first, before contacting the website here:

  1. If you’re already on the phone speaking to someone within that organisation, ask them for a geographic alternative phone number – or ask them if there’s a phone number they can give you that you can call from abroad.
  2. Check the website of the company or organisation you’re looking for the alternative number for – many websites provide their geographic alternative number on their site – normally under the “call from abroad” heading if there is one.

If you manage to get an alternative number using either of these methods above, you should still e-mail me here letting me know the number so that I can share with everyone else – that’ll make things easier for everyone else, and save them wasting time repeating the above steps.

If you still don’t get an alternative, then by all means send me and e-mail here asking for the alternative. I can either have a quick check myself, or I will post something here to ask if anyone else has the alternative number.

If you are e-mailing, please send the following information to make things easier:

  1. The full company or organisation name, and the specific department or area you’re trying to contact.
  2. The existing 1890, 1850 or 0818 phone number that you already have – this is very important as it helps narrow down the search for the alternative number

With the above information, it’ll make it easier to find what the alternative number might be – just giving a company name as many have done in the past is pretty much useless.
