Sky TV geographical alternative

Monday, June 29th, 2009

In the past, we’ve asked if anyone had a geographical alternative for contact Sky TV, yet another company that tries to make money from their own customers contacting them.

A recent post, here , generated a few responses from people on the difficulty in finding a geographic number for the company that they won’t change or remove as soon as it’s shared around on websites like this.

I did get a number that I published on the website, but have since had to take it down, based on this e-mail that I received from a SayNoTo1890.com:

I used the 01 number for Sky TV from your website & I was told that this was the incorrect number for Sky A/c.  This is an individual’s direct number in Sky who does not deal with queries & appears to be getting quite a few phone calls!

Unfortunately I do not have an alternative to the 0818 number.

And unfortunately, neither do I for the moment now either. If anyone else knows of any other number that can be used, please let me know.

Geographical Alternative for Setanta Television

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

A reader posted a comment recently asking for a geographical alterantive for Setanta. They are another company that try to make money when their customers contact them through their 0818 203040.

Thanks to Dave from the SayNoTo0870.com website in the UK, he suggested calling numbers that are customer service for Setanta in Northern Ireland:

One entry that answers as Setanta customer service is 028 30824020. Northern Ireland numbers can be dialled from the Republic by swapping the 028 code for 048. So this number becomes 048 30824020.

This seemed to work for the reader who asked for the number in the first place.

Geographical alternative for An Post Savings & Investments

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Recently, a reader of SayNoTo1890.com asked for the geographical alternative for the An Post Savings & Investments 1850 305060 number.

Many thanks to the reader who posted the geographical alternative that can be used instead of that 1850 number:

An Post Savings & Investments

Geographical Alternative for Aer Lingus

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Aer Lingus are one of those companies that tries to make money from their customers ringing them – hence they’re providing an 0818 contact number instead of even an 1890 or 1850 one, and why they’re enormously protective of any geographical alternative number which could be used instead, no matter how much we’ve tried to get one that works.

SayNoTo1890.com readers have provided what they think could be two alternatives, though I haven’t tried either of them:

If you have free phone calls to the UK as part of your phone package, or if you’re using Skype or any other internet phone service, you could try calling this London number – +44 208 234 4333.

Alternatively, another reader suggests using their head office number and asking to be redirected from there. That number is 01 8862222.

If anyone tries either of these numbers, let me know how you get on.

Government Departments using 1890 Numbers

Monday, June 15th, 2009

In the past, Fine Gael have attempted to raise the issue of many government departments providing 1890 numbers which would result in those calling those departments paying over the odds depending on the phone packages and contracts they have. The Fine Gael campaign details are available here on their RipOff.ie website .

While most of the departments referred to in that listing do have geographical alternative numbers – some easier to find than others – these 1890, 1850 and 0818 calls frequently cost more than they should – they’re definitely not CallSave or LoCall numbers.

Its unfortunate, but this issue is pretty much ignored in Ireland. As I’ve written about here previously, there’s actually no government department or regulator who’ll take on this issue and take on the mobile and landline companies who are profiteering on their charges to call these numbers.

This recent article, How 10p-a-minute government helplines cripple those most in need ,  in the Guardian newspaper shows how their equivalent numbers (0870 and 0845) attract much more serious attention for the costs consumers are being subjected to.

Complaints are rising about the use of these numbers – particularly over long queueing times and the way they can be used to scam people.

But change could be in the air, at least as far as calls to government departments are concerned. John Battle, the MP for Leeds West, has worked closely with Leeds CA (Citizens Advice), which produced the "Hung Up" report.

The article goes on:

It has found particular problems for people trying to get a Crisis Loan – on a number which is free to landlines but can cost 40p a minute on mobiles.

More than 95% of calls made to this 0800 number are put through to a recorded message, according both to CA and to an survey by the Independent Review Service, an official tribunal scheme.

To get to speak to an operator, a potential claimant would typically need to ring an average of 20 times. Listening to the two-minute recorded message that plays each time could easily cost £16.

I’m still looking for a copy of the "Hung Up" report, but when I find it, I’ll post more details.

Geographical Alternative for Sky TV

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

There have been numerous requests here for an alternative number for Sky TV – their number is 0818 719 852. A SayNoTo1890.com reader suggested the following:

I got this number – 00 44 1506831609  – from  SAYNOTO0870.COM  and phoned it.

Answered promptly by computer and asked to enter my phone number plus area code so call could be dealt with correct department.

No need to include 00 prefix.  I entered  353 41 XXXXXXX. Transferred immediately to an operator and all business was dealt with. This is current information as I made calls on Saturday 13th June.

As the reader pointed out, this is still a UK number, but for users of SKYPE and other VOIP service as well as anyone who has free Irish and UK landline numbers as part of their phone contract (such as with UTV for example), people will be able to contact this number for a lot less than the 0818 phone costs.

Businesses should understand the impact of providing 1890 and 1850 contact details

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

I’ve written before how companies should realise that not all of their customers will actually benefit from the LOCALL or CALLSAVE numbers that they provide. Depending on the phone package customers are using, makeing a call to businesses could actually end up costing a whole lot more than expected.

This is a comment that came to the website from one such business owner:

My company (BER services)uses a lo-call number which we had hoped was providing our customers with a cheaper way to contact us. I am annoyed that we are paying for this service but it is costing our customers as well. 1890-728464 the alternative landline number is 096-70166.

As a matter of interest (or a free plug), the business concerned was Allied Energy Rating.

SayNoTo1890.com Website updates

Monday, June 8th, 2009

It’s been a while since I posted here, but I’ve been tidying up the website and adding new numbers in the background all the time.

Many of the comments that people posted on various different pages have been deleted, but the information hasn’t been lost. Where appropriate, I have created blog posts out of them, or updated the relevant pages with the phone numbers provided.

I have some updates pending in the next few days as well, so keep an eye out for those.
