Spanish Equivalent Site

April 29, 2008 · Filed Under Feedback, saynoto1890 news · Comment

Thanks to the reader who sent us details of the Spanish equivalent site to this one. According to them, it may no longer be fully active, but there may be some details available:

I can see you have a post for other countries but looks like the page for Spain is not longer working you can include if needed http://nomasnumeros900.com/ user type the number without spaces or the company name and they get the result if any, handy if trying to book a place with no international number only number with 902.

We have added this site, plus equivalent sites from some other European countries to a new section on our links list to the right.

We’ve received a couple of e-mails recently about the numbers for Chorus/NTL changing. The older numbers are also on the Utilities link, but here apparently are the new numbers.

Interesting observation on UK equivalent numbers - 0870

April 9, 2008 · Filed Under saynoto1890 news · 1 Comment

A couple of weeks ago on his blog, the MoneySavingExpert had an interesting observation on how call centre operators in the UK were quoting the 0870 number (0870 being the UK equivalent of 1850 and 1890). According to the blog, from here:

Twice in the last week I’ve been given 0870 numbers to dial, yet rather than being told the number is 0870-123-123, both times it’s been told to me as 087-012-3123. Thus the call operator is never actually saying the phrase 0870. Cunning devils…

I don’t think this will be as easy to do in Ireland here, what with all our numbers beginning with zero - it won’t be so easy to “hide” a number quotes as 189-0123-123 or 185-0123-123. It might be a little easier to get away with it for the 0818 number - 081-8123-123 at least fits into the Irish formatting.

Of course, in Ireland at the moment, apart from this website, there’s very little comment or complaint about companies only providing 1850, 1890 or 0818 numbers.

New Numbers Added, Some Changed

Many thanks to those of you who e-mailed us during the week with some number updates and changes. The links to the left have now been updated, but here is a summary of the changes.

  • Our Aer Lingus number apparently no longer works. Anyone have an alternative that will work for their 0818 numbers?
  • We have been provided with an updated number for Ryanair.
  • Updated numbers have also been provided for Chorus/NTL/UPC
  • We have been provided an alternative for the Driver Testing Centre section of the RSA
  • SellItYourSelf.ie have provided us with their geographical number also
Don’t forget - if you have alternative geographical numbers that you know work instead of the 1890, 1850, 0818 and 1800 numbers, please e-mail us, and we’ll post them here for the benefit of everyone.

11850 Advertising

April 3, 2008 · Filed Under saynoto1890 news · Comment
Probably not related to this main topic on this site at all, but I used the 11850 directory enquiries service on my mobile on Wednesday to get a number for a hotel in Waterford.

I asked for the text back rather than asking to be put through directly (does anyone waste their money on this???). I received the text with my hotel name and number in it, but also some advertising was also included in the text which I’d never seen before.

And, as it turned out, the advertising on my text was for another Waterford hotel which just happened to be located very closely to the one I was trying to contact.

Pretty interesting – you’d be very happy with this kind of advert placement if you were the hotel I wasn’t contacting. If you were the hotel I was calling, unknown to them, they’d be under serious pressure to be able to meet my requirements because I’d have a ready made alternative immediately in the same text.

Calling 1890, 1850, 1800 and 0818 Numbers from the UK

If for any reason you’re in the United Kingdom, or anywhere else outside Ireland, and you need to call an 1890, 1850, 1800 or 0818 number, then this is the site for you also.

Many of the numbers on this site are provided under the “calling from abroad” section of companies websites anyway - though maybe not made all that easily available in many cases.

Don’t forget to put the +353 before the numbers we’ve published here.

  • About this Site

This website will provide geographical alternative telephone numbers to use instead of the 1890, 1850 and 0818 supplied by Irish Businesses, allowing Irish consumers save some money by availing of inclusive minutes of phone packages rather than paying directly for such calls.
